Biblical & Simple
So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls. And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
Acts 2:41-42
To put it biblically and simply, the early church was made up of individuals who were recipients of God's grace receiving the message about Christ (the Gospel) and following Christ wherever He may lead. They expressed this reality in four simple ways:
-
They devoted themselves to the Word of God, the apostles' teaching about Jesus, who He was (God Incarnate), what He had done (Atonement), what He presently was doing (Saving People) and what He will do (Come Back Again). They also taught the appropriate response to these truths - Repentance and Belief.
-
They also devoted themselves to the gathering of believers, the Fellowship. The early church sought to express their devotion to Christ by gathering frequently to worship God enjoying fellowship with Him as well as relationship with one another. In this way they were both encouraged and equipped to serve God alongside each other in a world and culture which desperately needed the love of God but was actively opposing it.
-
They devoted themselves to remembering the death and resurrection of Jesus by frequently meeting at His table. Communion was important to the early church since it was the meal Jesus left for His disciples to remember His work for them and their belonging to Him.
-
They also devoted themselves to prayer. The early church recognized that in order to navigate through a dark world and be productive disciples they would need God's help. They understood that they were dependent on God for everything, therefore they prayed together for His kingdom to come and will to be done.
Calvary Fellowship is seeking to be a church that emulates the early church in their devotion. This is why we devote ourselves to these four things: The Scriptures, The Fellowship, Communion and Prayer. It is not complicated what we do, in fact it is Biblical and Simple. We are a church which desires to be near to Christ finding that to be ultimately satisfying.
